About

Research at Georgetown

Georgetown University is one of the world’s leading research universities with a robust combination of on-campus resources and global partnerships.

Our students pursue doctoral research in the natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and the humanities. The Main Campus brings together the research based at Georgetown College, the School of Foreign Services, the McCourt School of Public Policy, the McDonough School of Business, and the School of Nursing & Health Services. The Georgetown Medical Center is a world-class biological life sciences research center, and the Law Center is at the forefront of constitutional and governance issues.

We support our faculty, researchers, and students in advancing the frontiers of knowledge, applying their findings to society, and communicating their significance. In doing so, we better advance Georgetown University’s mission “to be reflective lifelong learners, to be responsible and active participants in civic life and to live generously in service to others.”

Main Campus Research activities are under the direction of the Vice Provost for Research, Professor Jeff Urbach.  A faculty member of the Department of Physics at Georgetown since 1996, Jeff has served in the position of Vice Provost since January 2024. In collaboration with his counterparts at the GU Medical Center and GU Law Center, the Vice Provost’s role is to promote and facilitate research across the university, with a focus on proposal development and grant administration, compliance, and internal research support.

The goal of the office is to expand and enhance the research portfolio on the Main Campus, and to fully integrate students into the research enterprise. Professor Urbach chairs the Research Executive Committee, comprised of representatives from the Main Campus and the Law Center, which provides advice and strategic guidance.
